If you do not experience cultural discovery while abroad, then you have missed the point of leaving home. Everything you will experience abroad which is new and different to you is a result of the cultural aspects of your destination. Shared values of the people are expressed in the art, literature and day to day way of life of a country, and you will be sifting your way through the obvious differences as well as the subtle distinctions which make different cultures so fascinating. Cultural differences can be exciting and fun, but often are challenging and drive you to reflect on your own cultural upbringing as well. Prior To Departure - GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Enhances your Cultural Discovery Prior to departure, your coordinator will provide you with an extensive participant guide and a predeparture webinar to introduce you to the culture you will experience once abroad. You will also be encouraged to spend time in the Global Citizenship Development online modules - which will help you to consider the implications of your upcoming journey. Rama V Memorial Day (National Holiday) - Thailand Students can join the masses of Thai paying respect to King Chulalongkorn or Rama V. Rama V is respected for his modernization policies, and for protecting Siam (Thailand) from colonizing efforts of the west. On the anniversary of his death, Thais flock to the National Assembly building (Ananta Samakhom) where the King is memorialized in a statue on horseback. Many Thai believe the act of paying respect to this specific king will be returned with wealth and success. Believe it, or not, taking part in this uniquely Thai event will illuminate a strongly held belief in the power of spirits and their subsequent worship.
