Culture and History in Greece

Birthplace of the Ancient Theatre of Dionysus in Athens as well as Homer, the legendary author of the Iliad and Odyssey, Greece’s rich past contributes to the cultural magnetism of its present. Having evolved over thousands of years and multiple empires, Greece today boasts a fascinating and multi-faceted culture, of which Greeks are quite passionate and proud. Ancient Greek plays continue to be performed in their original theatres alongside the more modern concerts and performances of this highly developed European nation, while the influences of traditional folk music can still be heard in Greek’s popular contemporary songs.

About 98% of Greece’s population speak the official language, Greek, with minority populations speaking Macedonian, Albanian, and Turkish. Modern Greek culture is greatly influenced by the Greek Orthodox faith which is the inspiration for the majority of Greece’s holidays and celebrations. The persistence of family values is another vital aspect of this community culture, in which extended family members offer each other social and financial support in times of need
