Attractions in South Korea

Gyeongbokgung is a palace in Seoul that has a changing of the guards everyday at the opening (9am) and closing (4pm) of the gates. There is a Palace Museum and a Folk Museum located on the Palace grounds as well.

Namdaemun Market in Seoul is a bustling market with all kinds of foods, clothing, and souvenirs. The impressive entrance to the market is the Great South Gate, which was constructed in 1398 and rebuilt in 1447.

Beomeosa, in Busan, is a magnificent temple that was founded in AD678. This temple is set apart from the busy city in the mountains, which adds to the ancient temple’s serene atmosphere.

Some other attractions include:

  • The DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is in Panmunjom, just 55km north of Seoul, and is the dividing line between North and South Korea.
  • Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches in Busan which are along the “East Sea,” not to mistakenly be called the Sea of Japan, at least not in front of any Koreans.
  • Gyeongju is known as a “museum without walls” and is home to more tombs, temples, rock carvings, pagodas, Buddhist statuary and the ruins of palaces, pleasure gardens and castles than any other place in South Korea
