Culture and History of the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic’s rich and fascinating culture is well-known throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Home to myriad famous composers and writers such as Franz Kafka and Antonin Dvorak, the arts are a key facet of Czech culture. Czech music is internationally celebrated and has been said to be the most popular art in the Czech Republic.

Sports are another vital part of Czech culture, especially when it comes to ice hockey. In fact, most of the world’s hockey pucks are made in the Czech Republic, and during playoff season, you won’t find anything else on TV. The Czech Republic also has a very long tradition in the field of science as evidenced by the Czech inventions of the separation of modern blood types and of the contact lens.

While the majority of Czechs speak Czech and Slovak, about a quarter of the population also speaks English (mainly among the younger generations). The Czech cuisine is hearty and filling, usually consisting of a meat dish with a side of potatoes, dumplings, rice, or pasta. This is reflected in the Czech national dish which is made up of roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut
