Adam Smith on why he chose New Zealand for his study abroad desitnation.

Adam Smith

Home University: Endicott College, Massachusetts

Host University: Massey University, Palmerston North Campus

Selecting a destination was Adam Smith’s first dilemma when researching for his study semester abroad.

New Zealand looked “cool, yet safe”, and Massey’s programme seemed “reasonably priced and good value for money with heaps of relevant course options.” So with those boxes ticked, Adam’s first decision was made.

Coming from a close-knit institution back home in Massachusetts, Adam was drawn to the ManawatÅ« campus, which he describes as “spacious and self-contained, creating a real sense of community and support”.

A third-year joint Marketing and Advertising major, Adam felt at first overwhelmed by the study options available.  With Massey’s advice and assessments, things soon fell into place. By the time he arrived, Adam was already fully approved and enrolled into his final paper choices.

Adam describes this pre-arrival support as invaluable, allowing him to settle in and fully enjoy Massey Orientation without any additional stress or uncertainty.

Now on campus, midway through his Kiwi experience, Adam is more than happy with his final study selections. He describes his Marketing and Communication papers as “challenging but awesome”.

Adam’s advice to anyone considering the Massey programme: “Do it; you’ll grow heaps and you’ll definitely get back what you’re willing to put in”.

In Adam’s case, that’s a lot. On top of a formidable study load at senior level, he’s managed to fit in surfing, white water rafting and an All Blacks game. He’s even taken part in New Zealand’s legendary Tough Guy, Tough Gal Challenge.

And being in New Zealand, there’s always heaps more to do and see. Wisely, Adam intends to make the most of his Kiwi opportunity by taking a few weeks at the end of his Massey studies to travel before heading home.

Adam confirms that Massey has more than lived up to his expectations. He describes the standard of education, accommodation and additional support as “excellent, and great value overall”. Of New Zealand he says, “It’s awesome. I’ll definitely be back someday. Only next time I’ll be bringing my Harley!”
