Featured student Matthew Tryan discovers how Thai people come together during times of crisis Matthew Tryan Home School: Northern Michigan University Host School: Mahidol University Why did you decide to study abroad in Thailand? I was looking through the books of all the programs, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but I for some reason felt a calling to Thailand. I had no idea where exactly it was or even the culture but I just choose the program, but now I couldn’t be happier with my decision or experience here. I am having such a good time here and learning so much here about the culture and myself. What has stood out to you culturally about Thailand? I'm from a town of like 200 people so everything seems to stick out, but I just go with it though. I don't look for a reason not to do it, I find a way to make it happen with most everything. I will try anything once. The thing maybe that stood out a lot to me when I first got here is the homeless children and adults. I want to help people here, that people here don't want anything to do with them. I have done some flood relief work but I would like to find make a bigger difference. You were there during the floods. Tell me about how this and how it affected your time in Thailand? At first I was having panic attacks thinking about everything. I was thinking about all of my stuff maybe being ruined but then I came to the realization that my stuff is nothing to the people that are now dead because of this. People not only lost everything thing they worked for their entire life, but they lost maybe a brother or sister, mother or father or maybe just a friend. That is what affected me in the most. I just try when I can to help people in anyway and that's all I really can do. How has the community reacted to the flooding? Thai's are truly amazing, I can't believe how quick they fix everything up. Our dorm was trashed from the flood. It took boats and tucks and taxi and more boats but I went there the 18th to bring a friend to get his stuff and I thought we were not going be able to move back in for a very long time. Then I came back the 20th also to bring two German students to the dorm to get there stuff. It was spotless. Everything was flooded outside still but everything was perfect tv on and internet on. What did you do while school was closed? I went traveling the south of Thailand mostly, I enjoyed it a lot. I have never been anywhere like here, so I find most everything extremely exciting. I wanted to go help the flood situation but I went there and it was imposable to get a taxi to bring me into the floods. I am planning next term to travel north as long as the funds through global scorers work out. |
