Timothy Haber knew before he left for New Zealand that he wanted to spearfish while he was studying abroad at AUT.  Timothy went to New Zealand prepared with all his necessary equipment and pursued his goal of diving and spearfishing in the underwater world of New Zealand.

What kind of spearfishing trips are you hoping to participate in while you are abroad in New Zealand?

I am hoping to meet some fellow divers and have the opportunity to dive with them.  The objective is to dive as much as possible.

How or when did you learn to spearfish?

I learned how to spearfish from a good friend of mine in Massachusetts about 2 1/2 years ago.

What steps did you have to take in order to go spearfishing (What kind of gear do you need? Did you bring it from home)?

I brought all my own gear from home.  I use a wet suit, mask, snorkel, speargun, fins, weight belt, and a float.

What are you hoping to accomplish by spearfishing in New Zealand?

Hopefully, I will have a decent supply of fish in the fridge to cut costs on food and to experience the underwater world in New Zealand.

How do you think this will enhance your time abroad?

Spearfishing and freediving are two activities I really enjoy, and having the opportunity to learn more and meet other divers will surely enhance my time abroad.

Do you have any advice for future studnets looking to go abroad?

Although I wasn't able to go nearly as much as I wanted to, the times I did go were fun and the sea life was amazing.  I would recommend checking out Ocean Hunter in Auckland if anyone is interested in diving on a regular basis, I learned that a little too late but they were very helpful.
