Overview

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad offers a summer abroad program at University of Salamanca in conjunction with Active Learning Abroad for in-country support and services. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad has designed this summer program with your individual student goals in mind. It is built around a unique Discovery Model which is delivered by some of the best staff in study abroad, both in the U.S. and overseas, in order to provide you with an individualized experience through discovery in 5 key areas: personal, academic, cultural, social, and professional. Learn more about the Discovery Model.

The University of Salamanca, founded by Alfonso IX of Leon in 1218, is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. It was at the forefront of the Spanish Renaissance, served as a bridge to Latin America, and later became a model for many universities in the New World. Some of the most renowned Spanish writers and intellectuals were educated in its halls. The University of Salamanca continues this tradition of excellence to this day with a highly distinguished faculty doing research in 53 departments.

The university's 30,000 Spanish students have the opportunity to receive degrees in 58 different areas of specialty. In addition, 7,000 foreign students from all over the world take language and culture classes through Cursos Internacionales, the University Department that organizes these long tradition programs for international students.

The University of Salamanca is recognized and accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a granting degree high learning institution.

Location

Salamanca, a small city of 165,000 inhabitants, is home of some of the most impressive architecture in Spain, and yet it remains a lively and dynamic community. The city is characterized by its unique yellow stone facades which fill the streets with color and light. The diverse architectural styles of its cloisters, churches, and Renaissance palaces blend together in the streets and plazas of the old town. The striking engravings which characterize the Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, the House of Shells, and the facade of the university, all reflect Salamanca’s historical importance, proving it worthy of its prestigious title given by UNESCO as a “Mankind Heritage Monument”.

Housing

Students may choose from the following housing options: homestay, residence halls, or shared apartments. We always try to provide students with their first housing choice, but we cannot guarantee it. It is why we recommend students apply in advance so they have a better chance to obtain their preferred option.

Homestay

Staying with a host family is a way to enrich student’s experience and to reinforce the knowledge gained during the program. We select our families carefully and have known them for years. All of them have extensive experience accommodating foreign students. Upon arrival students receive a key of the house so they may come and go as they please. Students will be able to receive telephone calls, but most likely will not be able to have guests over. Full board (three daily meals) and one laundry load per week is included.

Residence

This is an off-campus student’s residence. Spaniards and international students are residents of this option mostly in double rooms, depending on availability some singles may be offered as well. Kitchen and bathroom may be private or shared. There are also common areas. Usually, the residence offers laundry facilities and meals may or may not be included.

Shared apartment

These apartments are shared by international students. They have single and double bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with cooking utensils, washing machine, refrigerator, and shared bathrooms. Students must respect building community rules and maintain the apartment in decent conditions. The price of accommodation includes the cost of utilities (electricity, gas, water) within reasonable expending and, in most cases, a weekly cleaning of the communal areas. Meals are not included.

Excursions

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad and Active Learning Abroad will provide excursions to all students participating in a summer abroad program. This will allow students to get familiar with some of the most interesting cities and areas in Spain from cultural, artistic, and historic perspectives. Summer students generally have one overnight trip and one day excursion during their program. Below are some examples of previous excursions. Please note not all excursions will be offered each term and locations are subject to change.

Madrid

Madrid, the capital of Spain since 1561, is a cosmopolitan city of 3.2 million people, and covers a metropolitan area of 5 million. Madrid is the seat of the government of Spain, and one of the liveliest cities in Europe, combining cultural and leisure activities for all tastes. Its impressive cultural heritage combines the historic with the modern, and is evident in its museums (Prado, Reina Sofia, Thyssen-Bornemisza) and monuments (Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Cibeles Fountain, Puerta de Alcalá, Neptuno Plaza).

La Alberca-Sierra de Francia

La Alberca is a medieval town where visitors may admire how traditional, centuries old, houses stand in perfect shape combining themselves with the natural landscape of the surroundings. It is very appealing having a traditional lunch in the town plaza in the middle of the silence of this enchanting village. To complete the day students will visit the Sierra de Francia and have the possibility to do some hiking.

Segovia-Avila

The old city of Segovia is located at the top of a promontory, originally for defensive purposes, and offers a series of magnificent monuments to its visitors. The most impressive one is the Roman aqueduct. It is one of the most prefect examples of Roman civil architecture, and it was built around 1sr century BC. The city is full of medieval and renaissance examples of civil, military and religious architecture among which the Alcázar (fortress) and Cathedral stand out. Famous for being one of the best conserved walled cities in Europe, Ávila also offers visitants its singular cathedral and the mystic works of Santa Teresa de Jesús.

Santander

This is one of the favorite summer resorts for Spanish aristocracy during the 20th century. A beautiful city with mild climate on the Atlantic coast in Northern Spain with great architecture, lots of natural areas surrounding the city and a superb gastronomy.

Aveiro-Porto

Visiting these two cities in Portugal provide students another opportunity to know another European country. Aveiro offers a relaxing atmosphere in its beautiful beaches along its coastline. Porto is the second largest city in Portugal with an enchanting old quarter, along the Douro River, and its famous Porto wineries. Our students will have the opportunity to visit them and admire this romantic city.

El Escorial

Built in 1557 during the kingdom of Philip II, El Escorial is a temple in honor of San Lorenzo. It is a magnificent mausoleum and a combination of temple, pantheon, and study center and meditation refuge. The great expounders of the Humanism of the Renaissance helped the King accomplish his project which was defined by reason, symmetry and balance, without forgetting even for a moment the all important austerity he desired. The Monastery can be considered a symbol of the power of the Spanish empire in the 16th Century. The Mausoleum of the Kings holds the remains of all the Spanish monarchs from Charles I to Alfonso XIII.

Ground transportation, entrance fees, and guided tours are included in program fees for all excursions. Hotel accommodation and breakfast are also included in all overnight excursions.

Other Tours and Travel Available

Beyond our included orientation and excursions, you will be able to pre-book a wide variety of day, weekend, and week-long tours at a discounted price through our travel partner, STA Travel. These trips provide the ultimate flexibility for you to travel where you want to go, when you want to go, and with whom you want to go.
