The University of Salamanca, founded by Alfonso IX of Leon in 1218, is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. It was at the forefront of the Spanish Renaissance, served as a bridge to Latin America, and later became a model for many universities in the New World. In 1492 Antonio de Nebrija published in Salamanca the first Grammar of the Castilian Language, which included an appendix to teach Spanish to inhabitants of new lands. Since then, the University has worked to extend Spanish all over the world.

Some of the most renowned Spanish writers and intellectuals were educated in its halls. The University of Salamanca continues this tradition of excellence to this day with a highly distinguished faculty doing research in 53 departments.

The university's 30,000 Spanish students have the opportunity to receive degrees in 58 different areas of specialty. In addition, 7,000 foreign students from all over the world take language and culture classes through Cursos Internacionales, the University Department that organizes these long tradition programs for international students.

The University of Salamanca is recognized and accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a degree-granting institution of higher learning.
